DESCRIPTION:
EPW - "Hansons Patent Chronometer" marked mvt, pocket chronometer with detent escapement of unusual design, 49mm, silver OF original case bearing Chester hallmarks for 1846, engraved gilt dial, KWKS (key not included with this lot), detent escapement of unusual form, gilt mvt, s#18 with matching serial number within case. A rare piece, sure to please the collector of unusual and obscure chronometer escapement designs. Another example of a Charles Hanson Patent Chronometer, serial #28 of somewhat different plate design, is owned by the British Museum and can be viewed at this link ... https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/H_1958-1201-1604 Please see our additional photos with this lot for images of Charles Hanson's 1859 English patent number 1950 for a "Chronometer Escapement," though we note that we have not disassembled the present piece to inspect how closely its escapement may conform to this patent design.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Ticking in some positions but stopping when moved to other positions (including pendant down), overhaul needed, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scratches around center, some fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere; nearly mint gilt dial; fine hands, minute with oxide and finish loss to its tip; case shows light wear, an attractive dark patina, some scratches and small dings to rear, reduced engine turning detail with full loss at shoulder; bow pivots freely and with excess play within pendant; glass crystal with scratch at center and some lesser fine scratches elsewhere.
